Batch Comparison Tool: How to turn production logs into a regression testing asset

Ensuring backend quality in large-scale, microservices-driven systems is a major challenge, especially when the system operates with constant A/B testing, asynchronous changes, and complex business-model data calculations.

At trivago, we built a solution that utilizes real user traffic to expand test data diversity. This allows us to minimize the risk of undetected issues that arise only when certain data variations or feature combinations interact in unexpected ways.

In this talk, I will describe our system, the challenges we faced, how we addressed them, the tool we ultimately created, and the advantages and limitations of our approach.

The solution I will present is not difficult to implement. If you already have access to real user requests and your backend resembles ours, I encourage you to give it a try. You may find that it significantly increases your confidence in the quality and reliability of your releases.
